The 2007-2008 edition of the tournament will be in two divisions which include 1 Chess Premier League (CPL) – (a) Each team is allowed a maximum of six players. There will be a 2100 rating bar. In other words, the average rating of the six players (or any four playing on a particular day) must not exceed 2100. (b) Each team is allowed only one titled player, whether National Master (NM), Fide Master (FM), Woman Fide Master (WFM), International Master (IM), Woman international Master (WIM) or Grandmaster (GM). (c) This titled player can be registered as a reserve. 2. “A” League – (i) Each team is allowed a maximum of six players. (ii) All the players must be unrated or have a rating below 1800.

The much-anticipated 2007 edition of the LASCO Chess League, gets underway today at the RBTT Bank Head Office in New Kingston. The opening ceremony will take place at 12 noon followed by the first round at 1 p.m. The second round is scheduled for Sunday July 15 starting at 1.00 p.m. at the same venue. This year’s tournament will see a doubling of the number of teams entered compared with last year. In 2006, the inaugural year, there were seven teams, which has now doubled to fourteen. Due to the increased number of teams, this year’s tournament will be played using a single round robin format, where each team will play each other once during the season.

The atmosphere in the RBTT canteen at Dominica Drive in New Kingston was electric as the awards ceremony for the 2006 Lasco Chess League and the opening ceremony for the 2007 event unfolded on Saturday, July 14, 2007. Mrs. Carren Peart, category manager at LASCO, brought greetings from her company, expressed the company’s delight at being associated with such a stellar, ground-breaking event and wished the players all the best as the TV and other cameras clicked away. Close to one hundred persons were present (more than half the number being members of the teams for the new league) as the awardees for 2006 marched forward to receive their medals/prizes to loud cheers, the loudest being reserved for the 2006 champions Knightmares who held their trophy aloft and shouted “Knightmares” almost shaking the building at its foundation.

Jamaica ’s Brandon Wilson followed up his win at the CMMB Caribbean Open Chess Championships held in Trinidad and Tobago with an emphatic win at the Sagicor Open Junior Chess Championship held in Barbados last week. With this win, Wilson has secured the unofficial title of top junior chess player in the English-speaking Caribbean . Wilson scored an unbeaten 6.5 from 7 games to win the Sagicor event which has eluded him for the last three years. The 2007 LASCO National Championship was blown wide open over the weekend, as pre-tournament favourite FIDE Master Warren Elliott who led comfortably for the first six rounds, could only manage half point from his two matches. Elliott had to settle for a draw against National Master Russel Porter on Saturday and went down to a shock defeat at the hands of rising junior star Mikhail Solomon on Sunday. These results left Elliott on 6.5 points from 8 games, only half point ahead of his nearest rival National Master Equitable Brown who registered back to back victories to move to six points. In third place on five points is veteran National Master Shane Matthews, who already has seven National Championship titles under his belt and is seeking to take an eighth championship crown. Any further slip by Elliott may see him struggling to fend off Matthews and Brown.

The tournament, which will be staged over 6 rounds, will be split into two sections, an Open section in which anyone can play and a section for players rated Under 1800. Prizes will be awarded to the top three players in each section, the top three female entrants, the best under 8, under 10 and under 12 entrants and best junior in the Open section. The tournament was named in honour Dr. Harold Chan, who won the Jamaica National Chess Championship titles from 1972-74, and 1978-79, and was one of the first players in Jamaica to earn the National Master title in 1975.

National Master Jomo Pitterson created history when he defeated Grandmaster Maurice Ashley in the final round of the Frederick Cameron Open to take first place. It was the first time in Jamaica's chess history that a Grandmaster was playing in a Jamaican tournament. The 2007 chess year was another good one for chess in Jamaica. The year started with the surprise victory by junior player Mikhail Solomon in the New Years Open in January. This was however not a sign of things to come, as Solomon failed to build on this success either at the junior or senior level. On the junior chess scene, the symbol of schools chess supremacy the RBTT National Schools Chess Championship, was won by Glenmuir High School in February. Glenmuir’s top player Onaje La Mont went on to register a mild upset over the 2006 National Junior Champion Brandon Wilson to take the 2007 National Junior chess title in March.

Seven-time National Chess Champion, National Master Shane Matthews and Montego Bay Community College student Oneil Hall walked away winners of the Open and Amateur sections respectively, of the 2008 staging of the Robert Wheeler Chess Open held at the Campion College Auditorium last weekend. Matthews secured the Open title after scoring a perfect six points from as many games. BROWN TAKES LASCO CHESS CHAMPS National Master Equitable Brown won the 2008 LASCO National Chess Championship, after battling for six and a half hours to secure a hard-fought final round draw against National Master Mark Holness at the Norman Manley Law School on Sunday night. Holness missed a number of chances to win the game against Brown after emerging two pawns up in the middlegame and having Brown against the ropes for most of the clash. Brown however refused to give up and fought on to salvage an incredible draw and with it a critical half point to end on eight points from eleven games and claim his first hold on the National Champion title.
